We had a good hard working afternoon polishing our presentations and we greatly enjoyed hearing Debbie and Jack's account of meeting the residents of 88 Narrow Street on Monday. Debbie and Jack had been to meet Rozelle and Dick Raynes and learnt about their lives in Limehouse. Rozelle had also written a book "Limehouse Lil" about here time in Limehouse over the last 40 years or so. Another visit was paid to the Grapes (great chips!) and again, much local information picked up from the staff and regulars. Sorry I could not join you on the day Debbie. Carol

Indeed, very impressed by the fact that when Debbie couldn't find the book, she hunted down the author! Really looking forward to the presentations on Wed. And it's great to see that on top of the hard work you all have been putting in to the project, new friendships have been made too. I like to think that's what volunteerings all about!

It was good to visit yet another part of the vast LAARC site and have an opportunity to browse some of the original documents in the records office. Our research will continue, hopefully building up to some acceptable presentations, which we understand will now be to an "enlarged" audience! Thanks Adam ! Hopefully we will have an opportunity to meet Kate this week.

Pat's page Today we moved to looking at the ceramic 'bulk' items, which we were told means they are judged not worth having individual catalogue entries and accession numbers. Most of it seemed to be bits of blue and white plates, with pictures of rural life and flower borders, much the kind of stuff you can still see on sale in markets but the Limehouse plates had no makers names, so wasn't modern, perhaps Victorian. There were a few bowls, mugs and eggcups. I had one more exciting object - a large pottery tankard. in pieces but most of it there. It had a relief picture running round it, a panoramic view of what looked like a Maharajah's procession, with wonderful elaborate carriages drawn by elephants and camels , all different, no repetition. As it was shaped like a European beer tankard I think it must have been a relic of the Raj rather than genuine indian work but again there was no makers name. Sadly I didn't have my camera but will try to get a picture another time.

Hi Guys, Just a quick note from Korea. I'm really pleased that you had a good day on Wednesdayand I'm glad the weather seemed to hold off. The Website is looking fantastic and your contributions are excellent. Keep them coming. I mentioned the project and showing a still of the site in my presentation and te koreans were very interested in the idea of U3a, esp in the use of an open website to monitor progress. So who knows. we may get comments from Koreans too! All the best and enjoy your session with Liz next week. Adam

It was a good afternoon. We spent some time looking at the Wetpaint site and learning how to add our comments to the site, which was useful. We then got down to work and completed the repacking of our metal and glass objects, sorted them and then reboxed. The labelling of the boxes is a little complicated and I think Adam will need to revisit the box labelling with us before we can be trusted to do it correctly on our own! It was good to see the finished boxes and to feel that we have contributed a little over the past four weeks. Some of us spent a little time at the end of the afternoon discussing the options for our projects. Jean gave us lots of very helpful information and much to think about.

I really enjoyed working with the glass and metal objects today. The spoon in the picture above was described as post medieval which could mean anything but it was very delicate fine silver with an engraved pattern on the back of the bowl. There was no makers name. I seem to remember someone telling me once that having no maker on something usually meant it was quite old. I took a picture but the detail hasn't come out well. The other lovely thing I handled was described as a 'milk glass' and dated 1700. It was in fragments and decorated blue, red and brown with a curious relief 'ric rac' decoration around the rim that seemed to have been stuck on afterwards. I'm not sure whether a milk glass refers tio the type of glass or to a glass that milk was served in - but I'll find out!

The iron objects were many and varied - a knife (though dagger might have been a better description), nails, staples and even a cannon ball. Who would have been firing cannon balls in Limehouse? All the ones I handled were a nightmare to pack, the slightest touch or even looking at them caused them to crumble and shed metal dust. However it was eventually done! At the end some of us sorted the record cards we had completed for the catalogue, and were surprised at how much we had done. What's more there were only two duplicates so our fears that we would end up repacking things that had already been packed were largely unfounded and the apparent chaos at times proved to be really brilliant organisation.
